Data Filtering  Text Attributes

Screenshot of PMTk – the Process Mining Toolkit

Screenshot shows the Text Attributes Filter dialog with the Activity attribute selected and the filtering method set to Positive: keep cases with selected attribute values. All distinct activity values are listed alongside their event counts, sorted by frequency.

The Text Attributes Filter allows you to include or exclude cases and events based on the values of any text-based attribute in the event log.

Attribute

The text attribute to filter on. Any string-type case or event attribute available in the log can be selected.

Filtering Method

Determines how the selected values are applied:

OptionDescription
Cases
Positive: keep cases with selected attribute valuesRetains only cases where at least one event has one of the selected attribute values.
Negative: remove cases with selected attribute valuesRemoves all cases where at least one event has one of the selected attribute values.
Events
Positive: keep events with selected attribute valuesRetains only the individual events that have one of the selected attribute values.
Negative: remove events with selected attribute valuesRemoves all individual events that have one of the selected attribute values.

Values

A list of all distinct attribute values, each accompanied by the number of events carrying that value. Values can be selected using the checkboxes. The list can be sorted in ascending or descending order by clicking either column header, and a search bar allows you to quickly locate specific values. A Case sensitive toggle controls whether the search treats uppercase and lowercase letters as distinct.

Distribution

A bar chart visualizing the number of occurrences per attribute value, offering a quick overview of the value distribution before making a selection.

Keep Missing Values

When enabled, events or cases where the selected attribute has no recorded value are retained in the log rather than being filtered out.

The default state of Keep Missing Values, its visibility, and which filtering methods are available can be configured in Feature Management.

On applying the filter, a corresponding entry is appended to the Filter Chain. Existing filters can be reviewed, reordered, and removed in the Filter Chain.
