Data Filtering  Consecutive Group

Screenshot of PMTk – the Process Mining Toolkit

Screenshot shows the Consecutive Group Filter dialog with the Event to keep option set to First event of group. Consecutive repetitions of the same activity within a case will be reduced to their first occurrence.

The Consecutive Group Filter reduces consecutive repetitions of the same activity within a case to a single representative event. This is useful for cleaning up event logs where the same activity is logged multiple times in a row (for example, due to system polling or status updates) and only the first or last occurrence is of analytical interest.

Event to keep

  • First event of group: Retains only the first event in each consecutive run of the same activity, discarding the subsequent repetitions.
  • Last event of group: Retains only the last event in each consecutive run of the same activity, discarding the preceding repetitions.

Non-consecutive repetitions of the same activity (i.e. where other activities occur in between) are not affected.

On applying the filter, a corresponding entry is appended to the Filter Chain. Existing filters can be reviewed, reordered, and removed in the Filter Chain.
